A Haines man was sentenced to 16 months of home confinement for trying to bring 802 pills of Ecstasy into the country at the U.S. border station here last November.

Dennim Craig Hagwood, 19, was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Juneau. Judge Timothy Burgess also sentenced Hagwood to 750 hours of community service and five years’ probation.

The pills were found in the hitch of a truck Hagwood was driving during a customs inspection on November 9. Court documents said Hagwood told Alaska State Trooper Josh Bentz he’d bought the pills in Canada and was trying to bring them into the U.S. At about $30 per pill, the drugs had a combined street value of about $24,000, according to troopers.

Hagwood was arrested by border agents on November 9.
