Haines and Klukwan capital projects survived Gov. Sean Parnell’s veto pen on Wednesday, netting the area nearly $9 million in funds.

Projects that received Parnell’s support include $4.5 million for rehabilitation for borough roads, $1 million for a Chilkoot River bear-viewing platform and more than $3 million for the Jilkaat Kwaan Cultural Heritage Center in Klukwan.

“It’s not really a surprise,” said state Rep. Bill Thomas, R-Haines. “That’s why you work so hard on finance, to make sure we get good work done.”

Thomas is the co-chair of the House finance committee.

Parnell vetoed $412 million in spending passed by the Alaska State Legislature.

Road money for Haines will be used for work on View and Lynnview streets, Fourth Avenue, Eagle Bluff Drive and Chilkat Lake Road. Borough manager Mark Earnest in May said some of the money could also be used for resurfacing Mission and Willard streets and First or Third avenues.

Other Haines projects that received funding include:

• $120,000 for a Lutak port development plan, a master plan for improvements and potential expansion of the facility

• $269,000 to the American Bald Eagle Foundation

• $122,000 to the Southeast Alaska State Fair to purchase furniture and electronic equipment for conventions at Harriett Hall

• $95,000 for an Excursion Inlet Hydro Project

• $140,000 to Haines Boy Scout camp for bathrooms and campgrounds

• $250,000 for cushioning beneath the Haines School gym floor and $4,300 for new skis

$468,000 to a renewable energy grant for Alaska Power and Telephone’s Connelly Lake Project

$44,000 to Klukwan for renovations to the ANS hall

$500,000 to Haines Assisted Living for a veterans’ home feasibility study.

Skagway will receive $10 million for city dock improvements. Also of interest for the more than 200 local Sealaska shareholders is the approval of $5 million for a new Sealaska Heritage Center in Juneau.
