The Chilkat Valley Community Foundation will be seeking $15,000 in local donations by Sept. 15 to meet a matching amount under a challenge grant from the Rasmuson Foundation.

The local group must meet the Sept. 15 date in order to qualify for an additional $2,500 to give to local nonprofits during its annual grant cycle this fall.

The foundation says in the past two years they have made it possible to distribute more than $22,000 in grants to local nonprofits.

Projects have included funding for cat facilities at HARK; a hand carved wooden salmon mobile at the Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center’s Hospitality House in Klukwan; matches for Big Brothers, Big Sisters; fluorescent bulb recycling at Haines Friends of Recycling; strategic planning and training for Takshanuk Watershed Council; educational materials for the Chilkat Valley Preschool; and others.

In 2011 CVCF established the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation Memorial Fund to provide a venue for individuals, families and businesses to give to the community in memory of their loved ones today and for years to come. Donations of any size can be made to the fund by mail or on its secure website.

The CVCF Memorial Fund is an unrestricted fund. A portion of the monies generated by the fund will be combined with the grant distribution earnings from CVCF’s Community Fund to increase the funding available for local grants for projects that benefit those who live in and visit the Chilkat Valley. This year’s grant cycle will begin in July with a workshop on writing an effective grant proposal. Applications from eligible local entities will be due by September 30th.

CVCF accepts donations in person, by mail or on their website and are also listed in the Pick.Click.Give. program each year.
