While teams from Haines and Klukwan battled in the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament last week, their younger counterparts also had several games in Juneau.

Students in fifth through eighth grade participated in “B” and “C” divisions March 24-26, against teams from Fairbanks, Hoonah, Juneau, Kake, Petersburg and Sitka.

Haines entered one boys’ team and one girls’ team in each division, and the “C” girls led the way with a third-place finish.

With a six-game slate, there was little time for Gold Medal viewing, said Sarah Swinton, who coached the girls with Ray Chapin.

Girls’ all-tournament performers included seventh-grader Kayley Swinton in “B,” and fifth-grader Madison Chapin and seventh-grader Jenae Larson in “C.”

Boys’ all-tournament honorees were eighth-grader Keegan Sundberg in “B” and fifth-grader Dylan Swinton in “C.”

James Sage, Gary Stigen and Ralph Swinton coached the boys.

The event drew about 30 teams and closed out a season that featured two competitions in Juneau and the annual Triple Threat Tournament at the Haines School.
