The Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center has named 2011 History Day winners in Haines.

First and second place-projects qualified for the state contest in Anchorage.

The top two finishers in each category included: Zayla Asquith-Heinz, “Evolutionary Traits: Violent or Diplomatic,” and Alexandria Chapin, “Trail of Tears,” in Individual Website; Jacob Ivie, “War and Peace: Vietnam,” and Maggie Martin, “Elizabeth Peratrovich,” in Individual Exhibit; Charlie Henry and Jennie Humphrey, “Thirsty for Water and Power,” and Keegan Sundberg and Keanu Lynch, “Debate on Prohibition in America,” in Group Website; and Jenae Larson and Corinna Hill, “Logging in Tongass,” and Kayley Swinton and Autumn Gross, “You Throw Like a Girl,” in Group Exhibit.

History Day drew 31 entries from Lisa Andriesen’s seventh and eighth-grade classes in February. Prize money ranged from $5 to $15. This year’s theme was “Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, Consequences.”
