As Jolene Lemieux competed on the court for the Lady Glacier Bears last weekend at the Region V high school basketball tournament in Juneau, sister Kim Lemieux cheered her on from the pep band’s spot in the balcony.
The Lemieux sisters both are Haines High School seniors. Jolene made the All-Conference basketball team Saturday, and Kim was named to the All-Star pep band on the clarinet.
Teacher Kristina Mulready nominated Kim for the honor.
Kim said she joined pep band because “the songs are pretty good, and it’s more upbeat than just regular music.”
Kim’s favorite pep band song is “Louie Louie,” and the size of Haines’ band means everyone has a big role.
“I think it takes a lot of courage,” she said. “I mean, with just as small as we are, we have to actually play it, and play pretty loud.”
Kim said she enjoyed seeing bands from other schools and teaming up with them for halftime music in Juneau.
She balanced the music with Jolene’s final basketball games as a Lady Glacier Bear.
“Sometimes I can do both, but it’s kind of hard, because I want to see my sister play,” Kim said.
