Haines High School freshman Devin Light drained two free throws late to seal the win that closed out the annual Triple Threat Tournament last weekend at the Haines School.
Basketball players from about 25 teams represented Haines, Juneau, Skagway and Whitehorse in “A,” “B” and “C” divisions, for boys and girls. Teams ranged from fourth grade through high school non-varsity.
As guests crowded into Karl Ward Gym for an awards ceremony Sunday, the Haines boys’ “A” team edged HoopTime, an Amateur Athletic Union team from Juneau, for the championship.
Light made the all-tournament team, along with freshman Justin Swinton, who was named most valuable player.
Other boys’ all-tournament performers from Haines included eighth-grader Keegan Sundberg in the “B” division, and sixth-grader Gavin McGuire, for the runner-up “C” team.
Haines girls nearly swept their three divisions, with the “B” and “C” squads taking titles and the “A” team earning second place.
The Haines all-tournament honorees were sophomore Jess Giddings and freshman Grace Jones in “A” play; seventh-grader Kayley Swinton and eighth-grader Celia Bower, MVP, in “B;” and sixth-grader Shaye Otton, seventh-grader Destinee Cowart and fifth-grader Laila McGuire, MVP, in “C.”
Ralph and Sarah Swinton and James Sage directed the Friday-Sunday event.
“The tournament went really well,” Sarah Swinton said. “A lot of games, a lot of people, but everything came together and everybody had fun.”
