A dinner and auction to support the Haines Venturer Scouts’ trip to Ecuador is planned for 5 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion.

Ecuador is a South American country known for excellent high-altitude climbing.

A group of 13 high school students and five adults is gearing up for a 14-day tour of Ecuador that will include mountain climbing, biking, rafting and a cultural tour of the capital city.

The trip started coming together last October. Since then, the group has been organizing fundraisers to defray the $2,800 cost per participant.

Saturday, local restaurant owner Steve Anderson will prepare rockfish tacos with coconut rice, beans and yams for $12 per person and $6 for children under 6, including a drink and dessert. The outcry auction begins at 6:30 p.m. with Bill Stacy as auctioneer.

Organizer Christy Tengs Fowler has been impressed with the donations made by community members.

“We’re collecting items until Saturday,” Fowler said. To make a donation, call Fowler at 314-0444 or drop it by the Bamboo Room restaurant.

Couples and individuals looking for a night out on Valentine’s Day can support the scouts at the “Sweet Themes” dessert fundraiser.

Guests will enjoy a variety of desserts and entertainment from local musicians and the drama, debate and forensics team.

Sweet Themes is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at the high school open area. Tickets are $25 per couple and $15 per person and may be purchased in advance at The Babbling Book and Alaska Side. A local fashion show for late February or early March also is in the works.
