The Chilkat Valley mostly followed statewide trends in Tuesday’s general election, although Haines townsite voters tilted more Democratic and Klukwan leaned more Republican than Alaska and districtwide averages.
In the three-way race for the U.S. Senate seat, Haines voters split between Democrat Scott McAdams and write-ins presumably for Republican Lisa Murkowski, 37 percent each. Republican Joe Miller got 25 percent. The statewide vote was 41 percent write-ins, 34 percent Miller and 24 percent McAdams.
The highway vote went to Miller, 40 percent; McAdams, 38 percent; and write-ins, 21 percent, respectively. Klukwan wrote in 81 percent; and voted 15 percent for Miller and 2 percent for McAdams.
For state House District 5, Republican Rep. Bill Thomas won Haines with 66 percent, Haines Highway with 60 percent, and Klukwan with 88 percent. Districtwide, Thomas beat Democrat Robert Beedle, 62-37.
Republican Gov. Sean Parnell was elected by 54 percent in Haines, 51 percent in Haines Highway and by 69 percent in Klukwan. Parnell beat Democrat Ethan Berkowitz statewide, 59-38. U.S. Rep. Don Young won 57 percent of votes in Haines, 61 percent in Haines Highway, and 84 percent in Klukwan. Statewide, Young beat Democrat Harry Crawford statewide, 69-31.
Voters in Haines roughly matched state results on a ballot question over expanding the size of the Alaska Legislature. Voters opposed the measure by 54 percent in Haines, 64 percent in Haines Highway and 63 percent in Klukwan. Statewide, opponents prevailed 60-40.
