The Haines Borough has received nine applications for the vacant tourism director position as of Tuesday, according to borough clerk Julie Cozzi. Applications are still being accepted.

“The deadline for the first review of the applications was 5 p.m. on Oct. 15, and what that means is they’re reviewed to screen out and see if anybody meets the minimum qualifications, and then we go from there,” Cozzi said. “If it’s, say, none, then, obviously, we keep receiving applications. If there are some qualified people, then we can start thinking about interviews.”

Former tourism director Lori Stepansky resigned effective Oct. 1. She had been the director six years.

Cozzi said borough manager Mark Earnest recently has focused much of his attention on Haines Borough Assembly discussion of commercial skiing tour permits and a challenge to Greg Goodman’s eligibility as a candidate in the election earlier this month.

“This is on hold while we’re dealing with the election contest and the helicopter ordinances,” Cozzi said.

An application and job description can be viewed at http://www.hainesborough.us. The starting wage is $18.81 per hour.

The minimum qualifications state that the selected person must be a “high school graduate or equivalent,” with a “minimum of four years of work experience in the visitor or marketing industry, preferably with management experience involving supervision of employees.”

Job applicants to date include: Tanya Carlson, product developer at Holiday Vacations in Eau Claire, Wis .; resident Raymond Dennis Jr., stationed at Kensington Mine for Goldbelt Security Services; resident John Hunt, editor/producer for Takshanuk Watershed Council; Shori Long, dental assistant at SEARHC clinic; Brian Ness, insurance agent at Wyoming Financial Insurance; Holly Parnell, dispatcher for Haines Borough Police Department; Adam Patterson, operations manager for Takshanuk Mountain Trail; Ross Silkman, sales manager for Alaska Wildland Adventures in Girdwood, and Elizabeth Strong, project director at Chilkat Indian Village.
