Beach Roadhouse has been under new ownership since this summer.
Jeff Bristow, Alex Reyes, and Todd and Amber Winkel took the reigns from Phil Busby in August.
“We wanted to move to Haines, and this showed up, provided some work, a place to stay and we just kind of wanted to make it a place to have some fun,” Todd Winkel said.
He said Beach Roadhouse is another source of income for the business partners who also work on the North Slope or in construction.
“We have two cabins and four rooms,” Winkel said. “The cabins sleep between two to four people, with full kitchen, bath, loft.”
The other rooms have a kitchenette and bath.
The website at http://www.beachroadhouse.com describes the lodge’s location as “1 Mile Beach Road, at the Battery Point trail head.”
“It’s a little more Alaska and a little more quiet, and a little more in the forest than some of the other places, but we’re not that far from town,” Winkel said.
The Winkels have two children: Natalia, 13; and Andrew, 2. The couple recently lived in the Anchorage and Eagle River area, and Todd said the move to Haines was prompted because “we wanted a smaller town, with better schools.”
Beach Roadhouse offers daily, weekly and monthly rates, plus Canadian, military and senior discounts. So far, Amber said, the clientele has included “a lot of Whitehorse.” Guests from Switzerland were among those who traveled the farthest to arrive at Beach Roadhouse.
Todd said recent efforts have focused on finishing additional rooms in the lodge.
“Right now, I think we’ll be open at least through the end of November, because we’re pretty booked up through November,” he said. ” December and January, I don’t know. We’ll probably stay open through most of December and January, because we’ll be here anyway, working on the place.”
