The borough’s Community Youth Development program is offering two new, free winter recreation opportunities.
Starting Oct. 17, games for youths ages 8 through 14 will be held 3 to 4 p.m. on Sundays at Karl Ward gym.
Games may include mat ball, dodge ball or wiffle ball, said CYD director Sarah Elliot. “We’ll play the fun, gym class games, or anything the kids want to do. Parents can play if they want to, or just drop their kids off.”
Play group for infants up to age 3 will be offered one afternoon weekly at the Human Resource Building on First Avenue North, tentatively set for 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays.
“The whole point of both these programs is people getting out in the winter with their kids instead of being stuck in the house,” said Elliott. Scheduling of programs is restricted by limited openings in school gyms, she said.

CYD youth basektaball programs start beginning Oct. 18 at the elementary school gym. A coed program for students grades 3-5 will be offered 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Brian O’Riley is coach. The cost is $15.
Basketball for girls grades 6-8 will be held 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sarah Swinton will coach. Basketball for boys grades 6-8 will be held 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. James Sage and Ralph Swinton will coach. The cost is $30.
Registration forms for junior high basketball are available through the school or by contacting Elliott. The program will also hold the annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot for runners and walkers.
