My relationship with the Haines community started in 1979 when I first transferred to 42 Mile border station to work as a customs inspector. I came and went twice and in 1985 I returned with my family as a superintendent in charge. My family and I were always well received in Haines and we were able to make many life-long friends.
My children will always be connected to this community also as they grew up and went to school here. You would all be pleased to know that you all helped raise them well. Samantha (Darling) is doing her master in glaciology at Ottawa University and Neva (Darling) is apprenticing to be a helicopter engineer in Whitehorse.
As time marches on and retirement is on the horizon in about two years, I am leaving my position and moving back to Whitehorse to finish my career. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the residents of Haines for making my tenure here a very pleasant one for over 27 years. I will carry this positive experience with me always.
I am moving on October 13, so after that you can find me in Whitehorse. Bill Darling and I are in the Whitehorse phone book, so don’t hesitate to call in for a visit when you are there.
