The Haines Chamber of Commerce is offering grants of up to $1,000 each to area non-profit organizations. There is $6,000 in grant money to give away.
The grants are funded by gaming revenues from local pull-tab sales. The deadline for applying is Nov. 15.
Applicants are required to write a letter stating need, purpose and how the money will be spent. Only written requests will be accepted. They should be mailed to P.O. Box 1449, Haines, AK 99827.
Two grant requests have been received to date, and there are no criteria for the grants, she said. The chamber’s board of directors will make grant awards.
Chamber manager Joan Carlson said the group didn’t award grants last year, due in part to a funding shortfall.
The financial gap was bridged in Sept. 2009 by closing the Chamber office on Mondays, and by paying off a copy machine that cost $300 per month.
