Thinking about serving on the borough or school board? The filing deadline for candidates is 5 p.m. Tuesday. Required forms are available at the borough office, Third Avenue and Willard Street.
Tire shop operator John Winge and former borough police chief Greg Goodman were certified as assembly candidates recently.
Winge is seeking a three-year seat currently held by Steve Vick. The 11-year resident said he’s running because he’d like to see more local hire by municipal government. He also wants to bring in more ideas for reviving the downtown and helping businesses.
Winge has worked as a contractor and commercial fisherman and served six years in the U.S. Army. Vick is traveling remote and couldn’t be reached this week about his plans. Red Cross volunteer Linda Geise also has filed for the seat.
Goodman is seeking a three-year seat currently held by Norm Smith. He said he’s a fiscal conservative who’s running because of concerns with borough spending. He said it’s criminal that the borough has large reserves while streets and sidewalks are crumbling.
The borough loses money by buying used equipment that requires costly repairs, he said. He also wants borough department heads to be responsive, and return phone calls and e-mails. “The public pays their wages. They have a responsibility to be responsive.”
Goodman served 17 years on the local police force, including 10 as chief. A job he took two years ago piloting freight planes in Anchorage was cut short by aggravation it caused to an old back injury, he said.
Smith said he won’t make up his mind on seeking re-election until the filing deadline.
Incumbent school board members Brenda Jones, Anne Marie Palmieri and Sarah Swinton have filed as candidates for three seats open on the school board.
Board and assembly candidates are required to complete a nomination petition with the signatures of 10 qualified borough voters. They also must complete a state-required financial disclosure form.
The deadline for registering to vote in the local election is Sept. 5. Absentee voting begins Sept. 20. Applications for by-mail ballots are due Sept. 24.
