Alaska State Troopers say they’ll resume the search for a 36-year-old Haines man believed to have drowned in the Chilkat River near 25 Mile Haines Highway when water levels drop.

Trooper Josh Bentz said two rescue dogs brought to Haines about a month ago narrowed the search area to a stretch about a quarter-mile downstream of where Jason Allgood’s backpack and subsistence fishing net were found.

The dogs are able to detect odors of human skin in water, Bentz said. “(The dog handlers) said the chances are better than not that he’s there.”

Allgood was a 38 Mile resident and customs and border protection officer who was working a subsistence net alone near the confluence of the Chilkat and Klehini rivers June 17 when he disappeared.

Allgood is believed to have been wearing chest waders and troopers theorize he may have entered the river to work the net.

Allgood left his plans on a Facebook page. His car was found near the fishing site.
