Whether or not you’re a Haines or Klukwan resident who favors cruise ships here in our fair city, one thing is certain: Tourism brings economic benefits. That is why when Gov. Sean Parnell comes to Haines, I hope I have a chance to personally say “thanks” to him for standing up for those who make their living in the tourism industry, bringing jobs to locals and giving us an important avenue to be economically diverse. When Gov. Parnell became governor last year, he wasted no time. He signed a reduction of the cruise ship tax, which was his vote of support for small business owners across Alaska. Yes, he’ll get my vote this year, but even more, he has my thanks.
