Haines Friends of Recycling is holding a scrap metal drive 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12 at its Small Tracts Road center.
Drive coordinator Frank Holmes said the group had stopped accepting scrap metals when prices for it plummeted early in the recession, but prices have since improved.
Accepting dump metal indiscriminately left the group with junk it couldn’t get rid of.
“What we’re really aiming at is the little stuff that we can either bale or box up. A lot of stuff out there can be cut down to size,” he said. Pieces need to be no larger than 30 inches by 48 inches.
HFR will accept steel, iron, copper, bronze, lead, zinc, motors, engines with oil and grease drained, chain, cable, car parts, wheels (no tires), small appliances, wire with insulation, metal pipe, faucets, fixtures, fittings and pots and pans.
A dismantling fee of $10 will be charged on intact stoves, washers, and dryers. Automobiles, refrigerators, freezers, pressurized tanks, canisters and fuel tanks won’t be accepted.
