The city of Port Chilkoot has taken the first steps toward developing a sewage disposal plant for the area, Carl Heinmiller, mayor of Port Chilkoot, reports.

The city has made applications to the newly-created Housing and Urban Development Department of the federal government for assistance in a three-part program:

  1. Rehabilitation of the Port Chilkoot water system.
  2. Rehabilitation of the Port Chilkoot sewer system.
  3. Construction of a sewage treatment plant.

Federal participation would run to about 40 to 50 percent of the total cost of the projects.

The City of Haines has written to the HUD Department concerning a co-operative plan which would provide area-wide water, sewer, and sewage treatment facilities.

A sewage treatment in the port Chilkoot area might well be somewhere near the waterfront. “unless you knew it was there,” Heinmiller said, “you wouldn’t even notice it. A modern treatment plant can look like a parking lot-and be used for one.”
