Thanks and still looking for matches

April 27, 2023

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) had a successful recruitment event over the weekend in Haines! BBBS is a mentoring organization that creates professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships between volunteers (Bigs) and youths (Littles). It was really fun to talk to potential volunteers, caregivers, and youth interested in enrolling in the program and visiting with many of our current matches!

At BBBS, we believe that every child benefits from an additional supportive adult in their life. Some families are fortunate enough to organically have that person, maybe an aunty, neighbor or a grandparent. Other families appreciate the nonprofits' role in facilitating that relationship for their child.

Thank you to Miki and her staff at Chilkat Restaurant and Bakery for hosting the BBBS event. Much gratitude to Big Sister Genny Rietze for her door prize donation from Haines Packing Co.

This event was made possible by a grant from the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation, an Affiliate of The Alaska Community Foundation. CVCF’s generosity to nonprofit organizations in this community is unparalleled and I truly don’t know how any project or program would get off the ground or continue without the support of CVCF and their donors.

Yes, there is BBBS in Haines! Yes, we are making matches. Yes, we still need volunteers and youth! If you are interested in getting involved please enroll on our website at or email

With gratitude,

Sarah Elliott
