Electronic waste recycle days scheduled for June 10, 11

June 2, 2022

Spring cleaners who have old computers, printers, televisions, microwaves and other electronics gathering dust will have the opportunity to remove them from the waste stream this month.

The Haines Friends of Recycling’s annual electronic recycling event will take place June 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Recycling Center.

In the past 15 years, the volunteer group has recycled 214,476 pounds of electronic waste, Friends chair Melissa Aronson said.

“Anybody that wants to volunteer to help, we will need help,” Aronson said. “We need help with unloading, weighing, and prepping the materials for shipping. Some of that requires lifting, telling people where they need to be. It’s a busy time and we’re only able to do this because of all the great volunteer help.”

The recycling event will be held in tandem with fishnet recycling. Residents also have the opportunity to drop off and buy used electronics.

“If people have electronics that they think will work, that’s not too outdated but for some reason don’t want it anymore, if they will bring that on Friday, we’re going to set aside an area where people can shop for electronics. We can reduce our waste and help community members by identifying things that are reusable.”

The sale period is scheduled to begin 1 p.m. Saturday, June 11. The disposal fee for all the electronics, whether broken or used, is 40 cents per pound.

Aronson encouraged people to remove paper from printers before dropping those items off.

All the material will be barged to a Seattle company called Zender Environmental, which recycles parts for reuse by manufacturers.

For more information contact Aronson at 907-314-2209.

The recycling center can’t take electrical appliances, smoke detectors, audio and video tapes, plastic vacuum cleaners, CDs and DVDs, household batteries, ballasts and capacitors and anything with liquid.
