Assembly needs balanced dialogue
September 23, 2021
Soon we will have a chance to shape the Borough Assembly in such a way that meaningful conversations will occur, common ground will be sought, and an eye toward the future will not mean ignoring the past. Adding both Tyler Huling, a relative newcomer, and Debra Schnabel, a long-time resident, to the Borough Assembly will accommodate this kind of balanced dialogue. Retired people, farmers and subsistence users, trades people, entrepreneurs, students, parents, elders, caregivers, service providers and other professionals are all important to the economic well-being of Haines. Because we are all integral to making a productive and healthy community, what we say and do matters. Institutions and government services that may seem superfluous to some people may be essential to others. And as some wise people say, “We have two ears and one mouth; we should use them proportionally.” I believe Debra and Tyler will do that and will encourage us to do so as well. I appreciate all who are willing to run and to serve.
