Public should benefit from resource extraction

June 3, 2021

I’m a commercial fisherman, and my industry pays a 3% severance tax, called the landing tax. I’ve never worried about it too much. I’m taking a resource, salmon, which belongs to the public, and selling it for personal profit.  Obviously, the public should get something out of the deal.

A severance tax is not the government taking part of what you already have, like an income tax. It is the sales price the people get when we sell something of value to a private company.

Mineral and timber resources in the Chilkat Valley are valuable.  Why should we just give them away to out of town corporations for nothing?
