Lady Bears defeat Panthers in the first games of the season
February 11, 2021
The Lady Glacier Bears represented the school well this weekend, defeating the Skagway Lady Panthers both nights on Haines' home court with commanding leads. The Lady Bears defeated Skagway 55-16 on Friday, and again on Saturday with a 32-point lead. It was a remarkable game for Junior Sadie Anderson who led the team to victory with 18 points the first night and 14 the second.
"Last year was just our starting year. Now we play better as a team," Anderson said when asked about the wins. "With COVID, we also know we might not have a lot of opportunities to play basketball. This means every time we step on the court we have to play our hardest. We're not going to be the losing team anymore, and we proved that this weekend."
The Lady Bears did not win any conference games last year. They were both a young and new team.
The basketball schedule is very different this year due to the pandemic. In order to keep the communities of both Haines and Skagway safe, masks were mandated this weekend for both the participants and audience.
The school limited the size of the crowd. Only three people from each athlete's household were allowed in the gym. While the bleachers weren't overflowing like usual, many watched the games on the Haines High School YouTube channel.
Senior Haley Boron was also appreciated on Friday at Senior Night, with former Coach Greg Brittenham delivering an emotional speech about Haley's strong leadership skills and work ethic. Anderson and Jobbins also contributed to this touching occasion, commenting on how Boron is a wonderful teammate. Boron ended the game with 11 points on Friday.
More games are scheduled this weekend, when the Glacier Bears will take on the Metlakatla Chiefs on the home court. Games can be live streamed on the Haines High School YouTube channel. You can show your support for the Glacier Bears by yelling at your television screen.
