Donations will help increase growing space

August 29, 2019

On behalf of the Takshanuk Watershed Council, I send so much thanks and gratitude to the Haines community. Your generosity and support towards the Starvin’ Marvin School Garden Party and Fundraiser made this year’s event our most successful ever. The event generated $3,036, allowing the garden program to access an additional $1,200 from the Douglas-Dornan Foundation.

The Starvin’ Marvin Garden will use the funds to create more raised beds and expand growing space, which means more produce can be grown for use at the school cafeteria. We will purchase long needed items to update our irrigation to a more efficient drip irrigation system. Additionally, we can purchase a new produce scale and build a wash station to safely clean fresh produce. All of these items allow the program to better serve and teach the students who work, learn, and eat from the garden.

Thank you to the over 20 local businesses and individuals who donated items for our live auction and to all of the volunteers who made this event possible: Rich Chapell, Jolanta Ryan, Michael Marks, Betsy Shiner, Joanne Gardner, Travis Kukull and Norm Hughes. Your support keeps us growing!

With sincere thanks and appreciation,

Marie Boisvert, Education Coordinator, Takshanuk Watershed Council
