Glacier Bears volleyball squad finishes season

November 29, 2018

The Glacier Bears varsity volleyball team finished off their season on Nov. 17 at the regional tournament in Metlakatla. The team placed last in double elimination matches, losing to Petersburg and Skagway.

Teams from Wrangell and Craig finished on top at the tournament, and will move on to compete in the state championship this weekend.

Senior Morgan Cloke said her team played hard and had a good season. “I was sad to see us go out so soon, but I’m really proud of my team.”

Coach Katie Dickerson said that next season the team will work on fundamentals, particularly passing and serving.

“I am hoping that the girls will work hard in the off season to stay strong and fit, so their bodies are ready come next fall,” Dickerson said. She added that she plans to host skill improvement opportunities throughout the year.

At the tournament, Cloke received the “All-Academic” Award for her GPA standing throughout the region, and Dori Getchell and Megan Whitermore received the “Good Sports” Award. Senior awards are given by the region’s referees.

Cloke, who will graduate from Haines High School a year early, has played on the Glacier Bears volleyball team for three years. She said she always knew she had to put in the work on and off the court.

“In my opinion you have to be a good student before you can be a good athlete,” she said.

“Yes, athletics are going to get you far but school is going to get you further.”

Cloke plans to study pre-medicine at North Idaho College in the fall.

The state championship will be in Anchorage on Nov. 29-30.
