Five bidders for highway project
December 7, 2017
SECON is the apparent low bidder for the first phase of the Haines Highway reconstruction project.
SECON bid the project at $36.1 million.
Kiewit Pruhs bid second lowest at $36.7 million.
K&E Alaska bid highest at $48.8 million.
The Alaska Department of Transportation opened bids in November for road work from 3.9 Mile to 12.2 Mile.
If there are no appeals to the contract from other construction companies, the contract will be signed in a few weeks, ADOT Public Information Officer Aurah Landau said.
“The road reconstruction is federally funded and will improve safety by bringing dangerous stretches of the road up to 55 mph standards,” Landau said. “This will happen by widening shoulders, realigning some curves, and providing sight distance to allow for passing zones. Construction will likely start next spring and be completed in fall 2019.”
A Haines excavation company, “Little Digger and Landscaping,” will perform mitigation work in salmon streams impacted by the highway reconstruction. George Campbell owns Little Digger and has worked on mitigation projects in other parts of the state since 2004.
The entire project’s construction is projected to take six to eight years.
