Karen Combest managed Lynnview Lodge for nine years before moving to Texas. Her nickname was "Suzy-Q"

Haines friends were saddened by the news that Karen "Suzy" Combest died Sept. 9 in Texas.

Combest managed the Lynnview Lodge for nine years, serving as its first manager. In 2015, she moved back to Texas to be closer to family.

Combest was born May 16, 1963 in Austin. According to a Texas obituary, she was nicknamed "Suzy-Q" by her brother and she was a "beautiful, independent, hardworking, loyal and loving mother."

The obituary also said she was a handywoman who operated power tools, and enjoyed dancing, bowling, music and movies. Creative and artistic, Combest's talents included sewing, painting and cake decorating.

Angela Achenbach said she was Combest's best friend, and that she will be missed. "Everyone loved Suzy for her genuine personality."

She is preceded in death by her father, James O. Naven.

Karen is survived by her mother, Louise Naven; brother, Alan Naven; daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Neal Schumann; two darling grandchildren, Erin and Conner Schumann; and ex-husband, Jack Combest.

A memorial Service was held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Austin on Sept. 16. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to a charity of your choice.
