First triathlon big success

Nearly 40 athletes from Canada and Alaska participated in the first Chilkat Challenge Triathlon this past Saturday, July 15, celebrating the beauty and bounty of the Chilkat River. Competitors loved the challenging 35-mile paddle-cycle-run course that started on Mosquito Lake, raced past Klukwan through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, switched to bikes down the highway to Jones Point, and finished with a run to Letnikof Cove. Many racers have already told us they’ll be back next year.

The race was hosted by Alaska Clean Water Advocacy and supported by the Chilkat Indian Village. More than 30 local volunteers made the race possible, and the CCT Steering Committee would like to thank competitors, volunteers, and the many local, regional, and national sponsors (listed in the ad in this paper) who helped make this inaugural CCT race a huge success. We expect the second CCT to grow in size and we will soon start working to put on next year’s race. Many thanks to all who helped launch this exciting summer event.

JoAnn Ross Cunningham, for the CCT Steering Committee
