It’s good news that Kyle Clayton bought the CVN.

As a reporter here and elsewhere, Kyle has proved himself courageous, fair and energetic, essential traits for a newspaper publisher. He also has demonstrated civility and respect toward our town’s citizens and institutions.

I’m confident Kyle will do a great job as the CVN’s publisher. I urge you to share with him your trust and support.

When I bought the Chilkat Valley News on July 1, 2012, I promised myself and my wife it would be only for five years. I’ve met that goal.

I took the job because publisher Bonnie Hedrick, the best boss I ever worked under, was making a deserved departure after nearly 30 years of service to the CVN. I saw myself as a caretaker, holding the place together until a younger, computer-friendlier publisher was ready to take over.

Kyle is already on it, reaching out to the next generation of newspaper readers.

I’m proud of the papers the staff has produced since 2012 and grateful to live in a town that appreciates and supports an independent newspaper. Operating the CVN is a lot of work, but it’s also a great privilege.

I’ll be staying on to help during the transition and to help write and edit as needed.

-Tom Morphet

former publisher, CVN
