Chilkat Valley News - Serving Haines and Klukwan, Alaska since 1966

Editorial

Some readers expressed concern that I wrote articles for last week’s Chilkat Valley News about borough issues, given that I sit on the Haines Borough Assembly.

They recalled that I had promised not to write borough news stories when I ran for a seat in local government. In fact, I wrote in an Aug. 25 CVN editorial that I would turn over editorial and financial control of the newspaper to others “within reason.”

The reason early last Wednesday was that I found myself without a reporter and was compelled to write up some borough stories. Professionally, I know this situation is not right. However, as a business owner I make sure the CVN is published and the stories are written.

I put my name on what I write and if I’m shading or slanting the truth, my sins are in print for God and everyone else to judge.

The CVN currently is advertising for a second reporter and the business is still for sale. The sale is taking some time because I’m looking for a buyer who will maintain for you the CVN’s standards of fair and thorough reporting. I’d also prefer the new owner to live in Haines.

Landing a second reporter has been difficult. Finding an energetic, capable journalist who wants to devote a year or a lifetime to chasing stories in the Chilkat Valley is not a simple task.

Thank you for your patience with this situation.
