Second appeal for rock haul

A second Young Road resident recently filed an appeal against a Planning Commission decision to grant Southeast Roadbuilders a conditional use permit for resource extraction above the Skyline Subdivision on Feb. 9.

Ella Bredthauer submitted a letter of appeal to the Haines Borough Feb. 9 citing three reasons why the conditional use permit should not have been granted.

She said the borough failed to properly notify Young Road and Skyline Drive residents that Roger Schnabel, president of Southeast Roadbuilders, applied for the permit.

Bredthauer also said Schnabel’s application did not provide enough “detail and depth” about the project.

Bredthauer said Schnabel provided new information in a meeting with interim manager Brad Ryan and Lenise Henderson-Fontenot about an increase in volume of materials that are set to be extracted.

Henderson-Fontenot was the first to appeal early this month.

Borough Clerk Julie Cozzi said Wednesday the borough has received about eight letters in support of the appeals, and one letter in support of the planning commission’s decision.

If the assembly decides to hear one or both of the appeals, the hearing will take place at the assembly meeting Tuesday, March 14.
