Puppet troupe on the Chilkat Center stage

Geppetto’s Junkyard will debut a new version of “Travels in the Belly of a Whale” Sunday to appease the Haines community after the troupe missed this year’s Southeast Alaska State Fair.

The group performed a version of the show in Haines and Petersburg in May, but this weekend’s production will include new scenes, live music and even “live salty dogs” on stage for an experience of drama, humor, song and dance.

“It’s like the same show, only different,” said Geppetto’s Junkyard member Debi Knight Kennedy. “There will be surprises.”

Knight Kennedy said this is the first show the troupe has created especially for the big stage. About a dozen of Geppetto’s core members will perform with their handmade puppets in all original scenes.

“There’s a general story and we all make up scenes that will fit within that story line,” Knight Kennedy said.

She said Geppetto’s Junkyard received lots of requests for a performance to make up for the troupe’s absence at the fair due to a scheduling conflict.

“It’s so much fun that we just can’t stop doing it,” Knight Kennedy said.

“Travels in the Belly of a Whale” starts at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Chilkat Center and will last about an hour. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
