Forty Residents Take New Year's Plunge into Lynn Canal


About 40 participants turned out Friday to make the 11th annual Haines Polar Bear Dip at Port Chilkoot Dock Beach. Water and air temperature of 39 degrees F. made the New Year's Day morning classic one of the mildest in recent years. The event's harshest weather came in 2009, when temperatures below 10 F. and strong north winds pushed the chill factor to -15 F. Marty Fowler photo.
