Skin Sewing in Klukwan

Kaitlyn Stevens of Klukwan puts the finishing touches on a pair of knee-high mocassins made during a class offered by master artist Jennie Wheeler of Yakutat. Wheeler worked for one week with village students and adults on projects ranging from key chains to garments. Wheeler uses seal hide, sea otter and beaver furs, and a variety of leathers in her work. She has family roots in Klukwan. Her workshop was sponsored by a grant from the CIRI Foundation, and with support from the Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center, SEARHC Traditional Foods Program, Klukwan Library and Klukwan School.
