Giving Is Spirit of the Season

Resident Matt Whitman donates at the Salvation Army's holiday red kettle, set up in the entrance of Howsers Supermarket, where Lt. Dave Kyle of the Salvation Army rings sleigh bells. Kyle is aiming to raise at least $12,000 in 21 days through red kettle donations, but said that was the lower end of what the church needed. "It would be good if we could do more than $12,000, but I really need to raise $12,000," Kyle said. Kettle donations pay for Salvation Army social services including heating and electrical assistance, and rental aid. Kyle also reported this week that the church would be replacing its annual "Angel Tree" toy donation drive with a Dec. 22 "Santa's Toy Table" event, offering news toys for adoption. The Salvation Army is flush with toys, so Kyle requested that donations of toys be limited to popular or current ones. Parents hoping to participate in Santa's Toy Table should apply at the store to secure an early spot in order of distribution, Kyle said. The Salvation Army Store is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tom Morphet photo.
