Following Forefather's Footsteps

From left, Barbara Troxel, Joanne Harris, Carolyn Camme and Susan Voncida. The great-great-nieces of pioneer horticulturist Charles Anway of Haines spent Sept. 4 in town visiting Anway's cabin near 2 Mile Haines Highway, above. They also visited the Sheldon Museum, where an apple tree planted by Anway grows today. The tree was one that Anway dug up as a start, loaded in a wheelbarrow and walked into town from his farm at 2 Mile. They saw many of the pioneer horticulturalist's personal items and tools and visited with resident Hazel Englund, who worked for Anway as a child. The women had traveled here aboard a cruise ship.
