Unveiling of 'storyboard' on Monday

The library’s unveiling of the Chilkat Valley Storyboard Monday will include a presentation by author Thomas Thornton, “the guru of Southeast Alaska place names.”

Library director Patty Brown said Thornton, who currently works at Oxford University, will speak about the importance of Tlingit place name preservation. Thornton’s presentation coincides with the unveiling of the storyboard, an interactive exhibit meant to educate users about local history. It will be housed in the library’s community area.

The storyboard, consisting of a 40-inch touch screen inlaid on a table, will display a map which users can touch to activate audio, video, and photographic displays. The map includes 30 places between Haines and Haines Junction, Y.T.

“This is a huge event. This has taken a lot of community and staff time to make this happen,” Brown said.

The project is supported by the Chilkoot Indian Association as part of the “Crossing Boundaries through Communication” project, and is funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. as an open house. Traditional and local food will be provided. A short video demonstration of how the storyboard works will precede Thornton’s presentation at 6:30 p.m.
