Eleven vie for harbor job


The Haines Borough received 11 applications for the vacant harbormaster position as of March 29, according to clerk Julie Cozzi.

Harbormaster Ed Barrett resigned effective April 1, and the deadline for the first review of applications was last week.

Barrett had been Haines harbormaster since August 2010 and previously worked as harbormaster and city manager in Whittier.

The position is advertised as open until filled, and the job description can be viewed at The starting wage is at least $23.97 per hour.

Minimum requirements are a high school diploma or equivalent and two years’ experience in law enforcement, harbor management or a related field.

The applicants and their most recent jobs are: Phil Benner, former harbormaster in Haines and Juneau; Richard Bernhardt, charter service in British Columbia; Elli Braaten, boat captain for Four Seasons Marine; Stephen Brooks, commercial vehicle enforcement officer in Tok; George Campbell, owner of Little Diggers and Landscaping; Brian Clay, auto technician at Bigfoot Auto Service; Mike Denker, operations/accounting supervisor at Delta Western; Rob Miller, clinical lab assistant at Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium; Phil Ness, pastor at On the Masters Road Ministries; Terry Pardee, self-employed crab fisherman, and Joe Parnell, Haines Borough assistant harbormaster.
