The art scene in Haines is active. Paul Wheeler says that there is about a one-year wait to be the featured artist at the Haines Brewing Co. Eight local artists, Merrick Bochart, Rachael Juzeler, Kelly Mitchell, Amelia Nash, Andrea Nelson, Rachel Saitzyk, Melina Shields, and Kelsey Wilcox-Lovig, combined talents for this month’s show. The group did not have strict guidelines, only the theme Year of The Horse. Rachel Saitzyk’s piece, Kawayo, is shaped from a piece of driftwood that caught her eye on the Colorado River four years ago. The piece had the ideal shape for a mask with knots hollowed out for nostrils. You might find it interesting that Bochart’s, A Horse I Used to Know, is actually not a horse that she used to know! But it is a horse that she initially sketched when she was at her horse sketching peak at about 8-years-old. Find out more in this week’s Duly Noted.

Tuesday
Martha Willard Day holiday, Chilkat Indian Village Offices and Klukwan community library closed.
5:30 p.m. Government affairs & services committee of the Haines Borough to meet and discuss, among other things, an effort to draft a memorandum of understanding with the Four Winds Resource Center for management of the Mosquito Lake School.
6:30 p.m. Lutak Dock special meeting with updates on the project from the borough’s contractor Moffat & Nichol. And before you tune in, check out Will Steinfeld’s stories on the likelihood of cost overruns on the project, and the engineering firm’s new estimates showing costs more than double the borough’s current budget.
6:30 p.m. Regular meeting of the Haines Borough School Board in the school library. On the board’s agenda are a personnel report that includes a new prep cook, lunch aide and home school coordinator. Additionally, the board will be talking about the sale and disposal of district vehicles, approval of health teachers and guest speakers, and capital project funding for locker rooms and roof repairs. Friday
9 a.m. Quilters and crafters gathering at the Haines Senior Center. All are welcome. Repeats on Fridays.
10 a.m. Lingít language listening hour open to all skill levels and ages. Listen to an hour of recordings of fluent first language speakers in conversation and sharing stories. Tune in for as many sessions as you’d like. Sessions are all conducted over Zoom. Check the Klukwan Library Group Facebook page for more.
6 p.m. In addition to First Friday events, auditions for Edgar Allen Poe’s Gothic Tales will take place in the Chilkat Center basement. The center’s doors also open at this time for Taylor Vidic’s jazz and Americana show, put on by the Haines Arts Council.

Last day to take a General Use rezoning survey currently live on the Haines Borough website. The borough’s planning commission is leading a rezoning initiative for the Upper Valley including Mosquito Lake, Chilkat Lake Road, Covenant Life, and the Haines Highway miles 24 through 28. Paper surveys have been mailed to property owners in the area, but all borough residents can weigh in.

11:30 a.m. Virtual open house hosted by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities share the draft of its Southeast Alaska Transportation Plan and gather public feedback. The plan can be found here which is also where public comments can be submitted.

Deadline to comment on the U.S. Forest Service’s proposal to rescind the Roadless Rule, including in about 9.3 million acres of the Tongass National Forest. That rule broadly prohibits rad construction, reconstruction or timber harvesting in most areas. Public comments can be made here, so far more than 74,300 comments have been submitted. They’ll also hold a series of meetings to find out how rescinding the rule could affect subsistence uses in Alaska’s national forests.

The state’s Department of Health is planning to update its Medicaid eligibility requirements to limit access for non-U.S. citizens, people who are lawful permanent residents, Cuban or Haitian immigrants and others who no longer qualify for federal Medicaid coverage. Because the Medicaid is funded by states and the federal government, the state can’t change its eligibility rules without official approval from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid services. Comments on this change are being taken until 5 p.m. on Oct. 1 and can be sent to [email protected], with the phrase Non-Citizen SPA Public Comment. Submissions must include the sender’s full name and email address.
