A couple on a walk in the Klehini River flats found an explosive they initially took to be trash when they picked it up.
They called the Haines police, who contacted the Juneau police department's bomb squad. A bomb technician from Juneau and another from the FBI came to town to investigate, then did a controlled detonation at a gravel pit at 25-Mile of the Haines Highway.
At the same time, someone saw a plane flying low in the area and, after it disappeared over the horizon, heard the explosion. That touched off a large emergency response searching for a potentially downed aircraft.
