Tuesday
7 a.m. Polls open on the statewide primary election. If you’re in Haines, you can vote at Haines No. 1 - the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall at 111 First Avenue S. In Klukwan, you can vote at the Klukwan ANS Hall, and in the upper valley at Haines No. 2 at the Klehini Valley Fire Department on Mosquito Lake Road. If you’re still undecided on how you’ll vote, check on this 2026 Visitor Guide compiled by the Anchorage Daily News, Alaska Public, Alaska Public Media and KTOO.
8:25 a.m. - First day of school in Haines
4 p.m. Community conversation about geohazards in the Upper Chilkat Valley with the Chilkat Indian Village Environmental Department and geohazard researchers for an update on CIV’s plan for and response to landslides, information about the community landslide monitoring program, and opportunities to share your own knowledge, experience and observations at the Hospitality House.
Wednesday
5 p.m. Volunteer at the Henderson Community Farm on Allen Road.
6:30 p.m. Public Safety Advisory Board Members of the board will hear an update from the police and fire departments in Haines, discuss the purchase of a tanker vehicle for the fire department, do a burn permit review, discuss the public safety building and consider adding the Klehini Valley Fire Department Chief as an ex-officio member.
Thursday
5 p.m. filing deadline for Haines borough candidates. Open seats include: mayor, two assembly seats, and four seats each on the school board and planning commission.
6:30 p.m. Planning Commission meeting. They’re scheduled to hear a Lutak Dock update from the borough manager, an update on the SEARHC hospital permit from the borough planner, and discuss a recent general use rezoning townhall and initial survey feedback. They’re also set to discuss changes borough staff are suggesting to the process of getting a conditional use permit, and hear reports on housing, landslide preparedness, the Safe Streets for All program.
Friday
10 a.m. Lingít language listening hour open to all skill levels and ages. Listen to an hour of recordings of fluent first language speakers in conversation and sharing stories. Tune in for as many sessions as you’d like. Sessions are all conducted over Zoom. Check the Klukwan Library Group Facebook page for more.
11 a.m. Member appreciation day at Tongass Federal Credit Union featuring snacks, drinks and cupcakes. All members and families are welcome.

Last day to weigh-in on the state’s priority list for projects on the Alaska Clean Water Fund and the Alaska Drinking Water Fund. The ten-day public comment period started August 13. The funds provide financing for water quality projects.

Local projects out of the Alaska Drinking Water Fund, which has $148.3 million available for loans:
—Tower Road Water Storage Tank Replacement, $2 million loan with $1.7 million forgiveness is ranked 12th.
— An increase in a loan provided for an upgrade to the Piedad Water Treatment Plant. The requested loan amount is $1.8 million. This project is ranked 5th out of projects that already had loans from the state and are seeking amendments to them.
— A project to develop a comprehensive drinking water protection and preparedness plan for the Haines Borough public water system seeks $75,000 and is ranked first among sustainable infrastructure planning projects. A request for $100,000 to model the Haines water system came in at number 3 on that list.

In the Alaska Clean Water fund which has $215.8 million available for loans:
— A $1.7 million project to inspect the entire sewer system, repair and replace 100 manholes and recommend other repairs is ranked 17th.
— An $80,000 project to recondition Haines’ wastewater treatment plant is ranked 38th.
— Also in that fund is an ask for a sustainable infrastructure planning loan of $75,000 to address deficiencies in the sewer main along Beach Road.

Last day to take a General Use rezoning survey currently live on the Haines Borough website. The borough’s planning commission is leading a rezoning initiative for the Upper Valley including Mosquito Lake, Chilkat Lake Road, Covenant Life, and the Haines Highway miles 24 through 28. Paper surveys have been mailed to property owners in the area, but all borough residents can weigh in.
