Decision on ski race will be made Friday

The Haines Ski and Hike Club will decide Friday whether the 2nd annual Miles of Smiles Memorial Ski Race will be held this weekend. Weather permitting, the event will begin 2 p.m. Sunday at the 25 Mile Haines Highway course.

At press time Wednesday, snowpack at 25 Mile was too shallow to ski on, but snow is forecast for the coming days, said club member Alison Jacobson.

“We hate to cancel it, but it’s going to take more snow. It may even snow Sunday,” Jacobson said. Call Jacobson at 766-3395 for an update.

The event will include an 8K ski race for adults and 2K kids’ race. Entry fees are $10 for adults and $5 for youths. Top winners will receive prizes. The race is dedicated to the late Dennis Miles, who for years set local Nordic track for skiers.
