Businesses boosted fourth-graders

Haines fourth grade would like to thank all the local businesses who helped sponsor our Yukon field trip and our studies throughout the year. We appreciate Parts Place for donating equipment and supplies for the car wash, Delta Western for use of the facility and hardware for the car wash, Olerud’s and IGA for discounts on groceries. We thank Stan Boor for loaning a great camp stove. We appreciate the fine boat ride on the Taz with captain Tod Sebens. Thanks to staff at: Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and the SMART bus in Skagway; Beringia Museum, Robert Service Campground and Aquatic Centre in Whitehorse; and Pine Lake Provincial Park in Haines Junction. We also appreciate the community members who let us visit their businesses and helped us learn about the economics of the Chilkat Valley including Doug Olerud at Alaska Sport Shop, Mary Jean Borcik at Mountain Market, the crew at The Farm, Payson Schnabel at the Big Nugget Mine, Pam Randles and Meredith Pochardt of Takshanuk Watershed Council, and Mark Sogge with Alaska Department of Fish and Game. A big thanks to all the parents who drove for and chaperoned field trips, cooked, washed cars, loaned gear, and gathered border documents. And thanks to the community who helped us acquire funds to make the trip. Thanks to principal Cheryl Stickler, who always encourages getting outside, Gen Armstrong for letting us use the kitchen, and to custodian Natasha Coleman for her flexibility and support when we use the school building. We know that most lifelong learning happens outside the classroom and we are lucky we live here.
