Townsite ski hill discussed
Fourteen residents turned out Wednesday for a discussion of developing a ski and sled hill on Haines Borough or State of Alaska property adjacent to Mount Riley Road.
Topics included insurance and Haines Borough participation.
The discussion was led by executive assistant to the manager Darsie Culbeck, and included suggestions for developing a 700-800-foot ski hill.
The project might start out as simply a sledding hill. Another suggestion was that forested land there might be cleared in exchange for the value of timber on it.
One suggestion was to consider a facility like one in Fairbanks where a bus returns skiers to the top of the hill.
Participants largely agreed that the appeal of the site was its proximity to town.
Haines Ski Club president Bill Holton said he agreed that the group should lead the project in possible future meetings with borough officials.
Holton said the project would be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the club.

Historic area ski hills include ones atop Young Road and at Mosquito Lake.
