The deadline for entering most exhibits in the Southeast Alaska State Fair is fewer than 10 days away.
“We always hope for lots of entries to make a full exhibit hall for people to enjoy,” said Jessica Edwards, the fair’s executive director.
Non-perishable exhibits can be entered at the fairgrounds’ Harriett Hall from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 19 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 20.
Perishable exhibits will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24.
There are new guidelines for photography exhibits that designate a separate class for old-school photography with a film camera, and that separate color and black-and-white film, said Edwards. Exhibit guide booklets are available at local stores and can be found on the fair’s website, www.seakfair.org.
Resident Nancy Wenner made a bed runner from “artistic Alaskan fabric.” It’s a modern piece, Wenner said, with vibrant colors in the vein of the Northern lights, with hues of blue, greens and rust.
Each panel of the piece features an animal native to Alaska. Wenner said that she made it for husband Jack Wenner, for Father’s Day, “to keep his feet warm.”
Resident Sandy Wratten is entering her first quilt that she made with the help of Rocki Rostad and Linda Axsom. “I didn’t even own a sewing machine until last year,” Wratten said. The quilt took her five months to create, and she said she’s excited to enter it as an exhibit.
Ketchikan resident Jean Bartos has entered a cloak and dress called “Ain’t She Sweet,” an exhibit in the sewing category that also will be featured in the fair’s Wearable Art Show.
“I chose to use leftover fabrics from my stash for most of the materials,” Bartos said. “So this year’s dress was made from fabric left over from my 2012 entry, which celebrated my husband’s and my 50th wedding anniversary.”
Bartos emphasized the wearable nature of her entry. “I make wearable pieces that are wearable, not costume.”
The fair is excited to welcome Sarah Lewis from Cooperative Extension in Juneau to judge preserved foods, Edwards said.
Lewis said she’ll be judging at a fair for the first time. She has experience preserving jams, jellies and pickles, an interest that comes from her father, who won awards for his preserved foods at previous Southeast fairs.
Lewis hasn’t been to the Haines fair since 1984, but she’s looking forward to judging this year and she hopes to teach workshops about preserved foods at future fairs.
Edwards said the fair is seeking volunteers to help with registering exhibits July 19-20 and on Wednesday, July 24. Help also is needed to set up the fairgrounds July 21. To help, call 766-2476.
