Ukulele shows, lessons slated

Fairbanks-based musician Russ Copelin, aka Ukulele Russ, will spend a busy weekend in Haines at the end of March playing public venues and giving private lessons.

The 30-year-old artist will be in Haines March 29 until April 1. Copelin will give a ukulele demo and talk at the Haines School Friday afternoon, and will play a private house party that evening.  Copelin will offer private lessons Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

He is scheduled to play the Pioneer Bar Saturday night, and will offer another performance in a more family-friendly venue at the Sheldon Museum Sunday afternoon. Before leaving Monday, he will play at Mosquito Lake School.

The Sunday museum performance is scheduled for 4 p.m. Other times are pending.

Aspiring ukulele player Maggie Stern asked Copelin to come to Haines after seeing him perform at the Fairbanks fair in August 2012.

“He was Jack Black on the ukulele... He’s so versatile. He does everything from cartoon jingles and commercials to heavy metal,” Stern said.

Copelin will return to Haines for the Southeast Alaska State Fair in July.

Contact Stern at 314-0448 to schedule a private lesson with Copeland.
