New firehall on draft wish list
A new or improved public safety building was among capital requests included on a draft “wish list” of borough projects to the Alaska Legislature compiled by manager Mark Earnest.
Earnest presented the “first working draft” during Tuesday’s assembly meeting. It also includes Lutak Dock upgrades, road improvements on Third Avenue, pool upgrades, road maintenance equipment and sewer treatment plant safety upgrades.
Earnest said he included the public safety building based on discussions he had with “the Mayor and other people.”
Earnest was not clear on how the public safety building’s inclusion on the legislative priorities list intersects with the work of the Facilities Master Plan Steering Committee, a group which received $75,000 from the borough to create a master plan to guide development of facilities.
“This is a very preliminary draft. It’s just to get the conversation going. It’s one project that’s kind of emerged out of all of the general fund buildings as a possible frontrunner,” Earnest said.
The draft will be forwarded to various committees and commissions for input and review before coming back to the assembly. The Planning Commission was scheduled to discuss the list at its Wednesday meeting at 6:30 p.m.
