Borough may require trip reports

Anyone traveling on behalf of the Haines Borough may soon be required to write a report detailing what they learned during the trip.

Borough manager Mark Earnest recently drafted a trip report policy that is now open to public comment. According to the draft, trip reports should include “the purpose of the trip, what you did, what you learned and what recommendations you have for readers of the memo.”

Earnest said he hopes the policy will help keep people engaged and attentive during conferences and meetings since they will have to report back on their experiences.

“It’s a good thing to have. It is something we have talked about internally forever,” Earnest said.

In addition to making trips more worthwhile, the trip reports would help make budget decisions on whether events are worth attending in the future, Earnest said.

All trip reports would be included in the assembly packet. Because the policy applies to more than just staff, Earnest said the final draft will likely come before the assembly for adoption.

There is currently no deadline for public comment on the draft.
