Baffled by school district decision

I am proud of our community and inspired by the amazing staging of “Oklahoma!” by Hainesites of all ages at the Chilkat Center for the Arts. Our youth are equally inspiring for their positive voice in government by working on political campaigns and by organizing a debate at the school for state legislative candidates.

I am baffled by the Haines School District’s decision not to allow all of the students in the downtown Haines schools to see Amy Gulick’s presentation “Salmon in the Trees,” when it is being shown to all students at Klukwan and Mosquito Lake Schools. I have asked many people for advice on how best to resolve this omission.

I invite those who opposed this presentation to come see it for themselves. I invite everyone to Amy’s informative, non-political presentation, 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 (Alaska Day) at the fairgrounds’ Harriett Hall.

I am proud to live in a community that supports responsible youth leadership. Bravo Royal Henderson and Eli White for organizing a candidate presentation. I encourage our Haines Borough school board, principal Cheryl Stickler, superintendent Michael Byer and our community to continue open, respectful dialog and to allow exceptional learning opportunities for our youth.
